promoting physical activity in socially disadvantaged groups
Dear project organizer,
With the MOVE project, the International Sport and Culture Association (ISCA) and eight associate partners have joined forces to take up the challenge of promoting participation in physical activity in socially disadvantaged groups. The European Physical Activity Promotion Forum – MOVE in short – sets out to collect and validate physical activity initiatives that have been successful in targeting socially disadvantaged groups, in particular youth, girls and women, seniors, ethnic minorities and immigrants.
We invite organizations and institutions working in diverse fields such as health, physical activity and sport, citizenship and urban planning, among others, to submit descriptions of their own physical activity initiatives and projects aimed at socially disadvantaged groups.
How to determine if your project is relevant?
Any of your ongoing or recently finished projects, recurring activities or other types of initiatives are eligible for inclusion in this collection process if they seek to promote physical activity and target socially disadvantaged groups.
The MOVE project defines “social disadvantage” in broad terms (WHO Working Paper 1, 2011) as it relates to:
• socioeconomic aspects (income, employment, education and socioeconomic status)
• sociocultural aspects (gender, ethnicity, religion, culture, migrant status and social capital)
• sociogeographical aspects (such as living in a deprived neighborhood) and age.
Socially disadvantaged groups may be disadvantaged by more than one of these dimensions. Special attention will be given to projects that target one or more of the following groups experiencing social disadvantage:
• youth
• ethnic minorities and immigrants
• girls and women and
• seniors
If your project(s) or other types of activities fulfill these criteria, we invite you to fill out the MOVE data collection form. If your organization has more than one eligible project, please fill out a separate form for each project.
What is in it for you?
Participating in the MOVE collection of project experiences involves several important advantages for you:
• Submitting your project experience(s) presents an opportunity for your work to be recognized as the one of 200 good practices in Europe. The collected project experiences will be evaluated against a pre-defined set of quality standards with a view to identifying good practices.
• Project experiences qualifying as good practices will be published in a database on the MOVE website (www.wemoveyou.eu) and in a handbook. The MOVE website will feature the logo, a brief description and a link to the website of each of the organizations behind the good practices.
• A number of the good practices will be featured in the MOVE2013 congress to be held in Barcelona in October 2013. All costs of travel and accommodation for the presenter will be paid for.
• With your work featured in the MOVE database, your network will expand considerably. You will have easy access to a large group of organizations with experience and skills in the field of physical activity promotion in socially disadvantaged groups.
